Birding Huacarpay Abra Malaga Machupicchu – 5days
Birding Huacarpay – Abra Malaga -Machupicchu -Huacarpay birding on request half day, arriving or leaving from Cusco and birding Saqsaywaman near the main square of Cusco and Inca Archaeological Sites, Andean Culture, Relict Woodlands, Andean Birds and Machu Picchu adventure.
This trip is designed for of birdee just that! We also know that many people want to see birds but also do not want to ignore the rich Andean culture and historic sights of Peru.
So with this in mind we have designed a very good birding itinerary and a dynamite cultural and historical tour. It is cleverly designed so that both bird’s history and culture are experienced in one tour. A great option for couples! Birding Huacarpay Abra Malaga Machupicchu – 5days
Bird Tour Day 1: Huacarpay Ollantataytambo – Peñas .Birding Huacarpay Abra Malaga Machupicchu .
Birding Huacarpay – Abra Malaga -Machupicchu – We will pick you from your hotel to begin our activities of bird observation at Huacarpay Lake, which is 30 minutes away from Cusco at 3400 masl. Around the lake we will be able to see species such as: Rusty Fronted Canastero, Bearded Mountaineer, Plumbeous Rail, Andean Negrito, Rufous Naped Ground Tyrante, Streak Fronted Thornbird, Cinnamon Teal, Puna Teal, Yellow billed Pintail, Greenish yellow Finch, Black-Chested Buzzard-Eagle, and a lot more birds.
Later we will travel to Urubamba where we have lunch, and from there we will continue to Ollantantaytambo and to Peñas where we can observe birds such as: White tufted Sunbeam, Chestnut-breasted Mountain Finch, Great Sapphiwing, Golden billed Saltator, Peruvian pygmy Owl, Cream crested Spinetail, Green and white hummingbirds, among others. Late in the afternoon we will return to Ollantaytambo where we will spend our first night.
Bird Tour Day 2: Ollantaytambo – Canchayoc – Carrizales – San Luis .Birding Huacarpay Abra Malaga Machupicchu .
Today we will travel by bus from Ollantaytambo to Chanchayoc at 4:30 am. At Canchayoc we can see birds like: White Browed Conebill, Marcapata Spinetail, Puna thistletail, Parodis Hemispin, Sapphire vented Puffleg, Tit like dacnis, Sword Billed Hummingbird, Purple Backed Thornbill, Rufous Antpitta, Inca wren, Cusco brush Finch, Gray breasted mountain Toucan, Scarlet bellied mountain Tanager, Golden collared Tanager, and more. In the afternoon we will return to the hotel in Ollantaytambo.
Bird Tour Day 3: Ollantaytambo – Abra Malaga – Aguas Calientes .Birding Huacarpay Abra Malaga Machupicchu .
We will leave Ollantaytambo after breakfast at 5:30 and travel to Abra Malaga, the high part of Polylepis at 4230 mas, which is 45 minutes away from Ollantaytambo. There we will climb up a hill where we will stay around 4 hrs to observe birds like: Andean Condor, Royal Cinclodes, Puna Tapaculo, Ash breasted tit Tyrant, junin canastero, White browed tit spinetail, tawny tit spinetail, Giant conebill, Stripe headed Antpitta, puna Ground tyrant, rufous naped Ground tyrant, White winged Diuca finch, olivaceopus thornbill, Andean Hillstard and many more bird communities. Late in the afternoon about 4pm we will return to Ollantaytambo in order to take our train to Aguas Calientes.
Bird Tour Day 4: Aguas Calientes – Mandor .Birding Huacarpay Abra Malaga Machupicchu .
We will leave the hotel after breakfast at 6 am to begin looking for birds such as: White capped dipper, torrent Duck, green and White hummingbird, Highland Motmot, Ocellated Piculet, Variable Antshrike, Andean Cock Of The Rock, Masked Fruiteater, Inca Flycatcher, Sclater’s Tyranulet, Inca Flycatcher, Silver Backed tanager, Slaty tanager, collared Inca, black streak Puffbird, Pale legged Warbler, White eared Solitare, and others. Then we will return to Aguas Calientes for lunch and a rest. In the afternoon we continue observing birds; late in the afternoon we will return to our hotel at Aguas Calientes.
Bird Tour Day 5: Machu Picchu – Cusco .Birding Huacarpay Abra Malaga Machupicchu.
Today after breakfast we will visit Machu Picchu. In order to reach the archeological site we will have to take the bus from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu. After we visit Machu Picchu we will return to Aguas Calientes by bus and from there will take a train to Ollantaytambo. From Ollantaytambo we will take you to Cusco by bus.

CLIMATE: Be prepared for a wide range of weather conditions. The lowlands can be hot and humid, while Abra Malaga can get very cold. Keep in mind that during a dry season, there’s a chance of a “Friaje,” a cold front bringing cooler weather and rain from the south.
DIFFICULTY: This trip falls under moderate difficulty. Expect long journeys and early starts, but the walking is generally easy. The hike up to Polylepis is optional, and those who opt out can stay with the bus.
ACCOMMODATION: Accommodations range from comfortable yet simple jungle lodges with limited electricity to standard hotels in key locations. Hotel choice in Lima depends on flight schedules, offering convenience or a quieter stay.
