Wildlife Photography and Birding Tours in Peru – 4 Days / 3 Nights.

Experience an extraordinary nature photography and birdwatching expedition in the Peruvian Amazon, exploring two of the world’s most biodiverse destinations: Tambopata National Reserve and Lake Sandoval. For four days, you’ll have the opportunity to photograph macaws, toucans, hoatzins, giant otters, monkeys, caimans, and hundreds of other Amazonian bird species, accompanied by expert wildlife guides.

Day 1: Riverbank Birding and Nocturnal Wildlife in the Amazon .

Upon arrival at Puerto Maldonado, our team will welcome you at the airport and assist you with your transfer. Before beginning the expedition, we will stop briefly at our office, where you can leave any luggage you do not need for the journey.
Our Amazon adventure begins with a scenic combination of road and river travel. We continue toward the Filadelfia port in the upper Tambopata River, where we board a motorized boat and begin navigating through the rainforest.

The approximately 40-minute boat ride provides our first opportunity for birdwatching along the Tambopata River. Keep your binoculars and cameras ready as we scan the riverbanks for species such as the Capped Heron, Pied Lapwing, and Black Skimmer, as well as other birds that inhabit the Amazonian waterways.

Upon reaching our Lodge, we settle into our accommodation and enjoy lunch surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest.

In the afternoon, we set out on our first guided exploration along the forest trails. This introductory understory birding walk focuses on finding fascinating Amazonian species, including antbirds, manakins, woodpeckers, and other rainforest specialists. Along the trails, we may also encounter active troops of howler monkeys and squirrel monkeys moving through the vegetation.

As night falls, we begin an exciting nocturnal wildlife excursion. During this approximately one-hour walk, our guides will search the forest for elusive nighttime creatures. Possible sightings include the impressive Great Potoo and Spectacled Owl, along with frogs, amphibians, reptiles, and other nocturnal species. The excursion can also provide excellent opportunities for macro wildlife photography, particularly when searching for colorful poison dart frogs and other small rainforest inhabitants.

Day 2: Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick and Amazon Canopy Birdwatching .

We wake before sunrise for one of the most spectacular experiences of the entire journey: a visit to the renowned Collpa Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick.
After an early departure, we travel by motorized boat for approximately 30 minutes toward the protected area of the Tambopata National Reserve. The river journey itself offers exciting possibilities for wildlife observation and photography. Depending on conditions and luck, we may encounter capybaras, black caimans, and other Amazonian wildlife along the riverbanks. With exceptional luck, travelers may even glimpse a jaguar resting near the water.

Upon arrival at the clay lick, we take our positions and prepare for one of the Amazon’s most impressive natural spectacles. Every morning, large numbers of parrots and macaws gather at the clay lick to consume mineral-rich soil, creating an extraordinary scene for birdwatching and wildlife photography.

Our main targets include three of the Amazon’s most spectacular large macaws:

• Scarlet Macaw
• Red-and-green Macaw
• Blue-and-yellow Macaw

As the birds gather, we observe their colorful plumage, vocalizations, and complex social behavior while photographing them against the backdrop of the rainforest.

After the clay lick experience, we return to the lodge for lunch and time to relax.

In the afternoon, we continue with canopy birding from a 50-meter-high observation tower. From this elevated viewpoint, we gain a different perspective of the Amazon rainforest and have opportunities to photograph birds inhabiting the middle and upper levels of the forest.

Possible sightings include toucans, tanagers, oropendolas, and other canopy species. The day concludes with a beautiful sunset overlooking the Tambopata River, creating an ideal setting for landscape and nature photography.

Day 3: Sandoval Lake Birding and Giant River Otter Search .

We begin the morning with an early excursion to a nearby mammal clay lick, a natural site where wildlife may gather to consume mineral-rich soil. Depending on local conditions, we may encounter South American tapirs, white-lipped peccaries, and red brocket deer, offering exciting opportunities for wildlife observation and photography.

After breakfast, we travel back toward Puerto Maldonado before continuing our journey to the spectacular Sandoval Lake, located within the Tambopata National Reserve.

After completing the entrance procedures, we begin a walk of approximately 3 kilometers through pristine primary rainforest. Along the trail, our guide will interpret the remarkable diversity of Amazonian plants and trees while helping us search for birds and other wildlife.

Once we reach the shores of Sandoval Lake, we board traditional paddle canoes and begin exploring the tranquil waters of this iconic Amazonian oxbow lake.

The calm environment provides excellent opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife photography. One of our main targets is the distinctive Hoatzin, a fascinating bird commonly associated with the lake’s palm-filled wetlands. We will also search for kingfishers, herons, macaws, and other water-associated and forest species.

Sandoval Lake is also renowned for sightings of the giant river otter, one of the Amazon’s most charismatic mammals. During our exploration, we carefully scan the lake’s shores and channels in search of family groups as they swim, fish, communicate, and patrol their territory.

As the afternoon progresses, we enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and beautiful scenery of the lake before photographing the sunset.

After dark, we embark on a nighttime wildlife search for black caimans and other nocturnal creatures. This excursion offers a different perspective of the Amazon and unique opportunities for low-light wildlife photography.

Day 4: Final Giant River Otter Search and Return to Puerto Maldonado .

We begin our final morning with an early canoe excursion across Sandoval Lake, dedicating our last hours to searching for giant river otters. The early morning is often an excellent time for wildlife observation, as the cooler conditions and soft natural light create favorable opportunities for photography.

We carefully explore the lake’s channels and shoreline, looking for otter families as they move through the water, hunt for fish, and interact with one another.

After returning to the lodge for breakfast, we enjoy one final guided walk through the rainforest. This last exploration focuses on understory birding, giving us another opportunity to search for elusive species such as antbirds, manakins, woodpeckers, and other Amazonian forest specialists.

During the walk, our guide will also share insights into the traditional and practical uses of rainforest plants, highlighting the extraordinary relationship between local communities and the Amazon ecosystem.

Finally, we begin our return journey to Puerto Maldonado. Upon arrival, we will transfer you to the airport or bus terminal for your onward journey, bringing this unforgettable 4-day Peruvian Amazon wildlife photography and birding adventure to an end.
