ITINERARY

Day 1: Endemic Birds North Peru- Bird of Bosque de Pómac & the Peruvian Plantcutter .

Upon arrival at the Chiclayo airport, we head directly to the Bosque de Pómac Historical Sanctuary, a dry forest reserve famous for its concentration of Tumbesian birds. Our main target is the Peruvian Plantcutter, alongside several other local endemics.

The Lambayeque region is also celebrated for having some of the best traditional cuisine in Peru—seafood stews, ancient bean dishes, and pumpkin-based preparations that date back more than 5,000 years.

After lunch (not included), we visit the extraordinary Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum, home to one of the most important pre-Columbian archaeological collections in the world. The exhibits showcase the wealth and artistry of the Lord of Sipán and the ancient Mochica culture.
The afternoon is free to relax.

Day 2: Endemic Birds North Peru-  Chaparri Private Conservation Area .

Today we enjoy a full-day exploration of Chaparri, Peru’s first private conservation area and a sanctuary for threatened dry forest species. At different elevations, we search for several endemic birds of North Peru, with special attention to the White-winged Guan, a species once believed extinct and now successfully protected here.

In the evening, we board a comfortable night bus for the 7–8-hour journey to the warm northern city of Tumbes.

Day 3: Endemic Birds North Peru and Mangroves of Tumbes – The Cradle of the Tumbesian Endemic Region .

Upon arrival in Tumbes, we check in at our hotel before continuing to the Manglares de Tumbes National Sanctuary. These extensive mangroves provide refuge for hundreds of coastal and aquatic birds that we will observe from small boats navigating the natural water channels.

Lunch features fish and seafood dishes—plus an optional Pisco tasting (not included).

In the afternoon, we explore the hotel’s artificial lagoons, productive wetlands that attract species such as Roseate

Spoonbill, Wood Stork, numerous ducks, and a variety of other northern Peru endemics.

Day 4: Cerros de Amotape National Park.

Our final full day takes us into Cerros de Amotape National Park, one of the most important protected areas in northwestern Peru.

After a long but rewarding day, we transfer to the Tumbes airport or return to the selected hotel, depending on your travel plans.

Day 2 – Trip Birding Northern Peru and  Carob Woodlands & Deciduous Dry Forest Birding .

Catch an early flight to Chiclayo, then travel toward Bosque Pomac, one of the top birding sites in Peru’s Tumbesian region. Here we search for the rare Peruvian Plantcutter, along with Tumbesian specialties such as Rufous Flycatcher, Baird’s Flycatcher, White-tailed Jay, Scarlet-backed Woodpecker, Coastal Miner, Cinereous Finch, Short-tailed Field Tyrant, and Peruvian Pygmy Owl.

We’ll also scan wetlands and ponds for Comb Duck, Masked Duck, and migratory shorebirds. By afternoon, we continue to Salas, where nightfall brings a chance for the elusive West Peruvian Screech Owl.

Day 3 –Trip Birding Northern Peru –   Frejolillo Forest & Quebrada Limón .

This morning’s destination is the Frejolillo Forest, stronghold of the endangered White-winged Guan. Other key species include White-headed Brush Finch, Henna-hooded Foliage-gleaner, Ecuadorian Piculet, Elegant Crescentchest, Grey-and-white Tyrannulet, and Black-capped Sparrow.

As we exit the forest, watch for Short-tailed Field Tyrant, Tumbes Sparrow, Peruvian Thick-knee, Tumbes Hummingbird, Tumbes Tyrant, and Short-tailed Woodstar. With luck, a Spotted Rail may appear along roadside wetlands.

Day 4 – Trip Birding Northern Peru Abra Porculla & Jaén .

Head inland to Abra Porculla, the lowest Andean pass, hosting species such as Piura Chat-Tyrant, Peruvian Sheartail, Line-cheeked Spinetail, Chapman’s Antshrike, Bay-crowned Brush Finch, Three-banded Warbler, and Black-cowled Saltator. A sighting of Andean Tinamou would be a highlight.

We continue toward Jaén, stopping for the endemic Little Inca Finch. Around Jaén, we target Marañón Crescentchest, Chinchipe Spinetail, Marañón Slaty Antshrike, Rufous-fronted Thornbird, Purple-throated Euphonia, and Red-crested Finch.

Day 5 –  Trip Birding Northern Peru to Dry Marañón Forest & Huembo Hummingbirds .

An early departure takes us to Tamborapa and Bosque Yanahuanca, where we search for Marañón Spinetail, Buff-bellied Tanager, Chinchipe Spinetail, and Marañón Crescentchest. Additional targets include Marañón Thrush, Yellow-cheeked Becard, Speckle-breasted Wren, Tataupa Tinamou, and Military Macaw.

Following the Utcubamba River, we look for Torrent Duck, Fasciated Tiger Heron, Blue Ground Dove, and more. The afternoon brings us to the famous Huembo Reserve, where the Marvelous Spatuletail and Little Woodstar offer unforgettable photographic opportunities.

Day 6 – Trip Birding Northern Peru – San Lorenzo & Huembo Trails .

We begin at San Lorenzo, home to the enigmatic Pale-billed Antpitta, Rusty-tinged Antpitta, Russet-mantled Softtail, White-capped Tanager, and Mountain Avocetbill.

After midday, we return to Huembo for more time with the Marvelous Spatuletail, plus species such as Andean Emerald, Green-tailed Trainbearer, Violet-fronted Brilliant, Emerald Toucanet, and Chestnut-capped Brush Finch.

Days 7–9 –  Trip Birding Northern Peru  to Abra Patricia & Owlet Lodge: Cloud Forest Endemics .

Travel to the world-renowned Abra Patricia for three days of immersive cloud forest birding at Owlet Lodge. This is one of the best places on Earth to search for the iconic Long-whiskered Owlet. Night walks may also reveal White-throated Screech Owl, Cinnamon Screech Owl, and Rufous-banded Owl.

Mixed flocks often include Grass-green Tanager, Blue-browed Tanager, Hooded Mountain Tanager, Flame-faced Tanager, Red-hooded Tanager, and Saffron-crowned Tanager. Other specialties here are Ochre-fronted Antpitta, White-faced Nunbird, Variable Antshrike, Royal Sunangel, and Lulu’s Tody-Flycatcher.

Day 10 – Afluentes & Llantaria .

Explore the lower elevations of Abra Patricia, targeting Versicolored Barbet, Speckle-chested Piculet, Golden Tanager, Bay-headed Tanager, Paradise Tanager, and the vibrant Andean Cock-of-the-Rock. Lower forests also hold Equatorial Greytail and Ecuadorian Piedtail.

We continue toward Mauritia palm forests, where Point-tailed Palmcreeper and other specialists reside.

Day 11 – Mishquiyacu Mountains .

A full day in the Mishquiyacu Mountains gives us a chance to find the rare Mishana Tyrannulet, Buff-throated Tody-Tyrant, Fiery-capped Manakin, Tawny-throated Leaftosser, and forest antbirds. Lower elevations may produce White-bellied Pygmy-Tyrant, Scarlet-breasted Fruiteater, and other foothill gems.

Night birding targets include Stygian Owl, Black-banded Owl, and Ferruginous Pygmy Owl.

Overnight: Moyobamba (B:L:D)

Day 12 – Morro de Calzada & Lowland Marshes .

The morning is dedicated to species such as Mishana Tyrannulet, Pale-breasted Thrush, and Varzea Thrush. Nearby marshes offer Pale-eyed Blackbird, Black-billed Seed Finch, and Masked Duck.

A private reserve provides excellent chances to observe Rufous-breasted Wood-Quail, Brown Tinamou, Wire-crested Thorntail, and Napo Sabrewing at the feeding stations.

Day 13 – Leymebamba & the Utcubamba Valley .

Spend a final morning birding the Abra Patricia area, searching again for Rusty-tinged Antpitta, Royal Sunangel, and other localized species. In the afternoon, descend into the scenic Utcubamba Valley for Koepcke’s Screech Owl, Marañón Crescentchest, Black-necked Woodpecker, and various Andean endemics.

Overnight: Leymebamba (B:L:D)

Day 14 – Abra Barro Negro & Marañón Valley .

Begin birding near Leymebamba, where mixed flocks may include Red-hooded Tanager. With luck, an Andean Condor could soar overhead.

Then continue to Abra Barro Negro, target-rich with Coppery Metaltail, Neblina Tapaculo, Gray-breasted Mountain Toucan, Violet-throated Starfrontlet, Moustached Flowerpiercer, White-chinned Thistletail, and Many-striped Canastero.

Descending into the Marañón Canyon, focus on Yellow-faced Parrotlet, Chestnut-backed Thornbird, Peruvian Pigeon, and Marañón Thrush.

Day 15 – Marañón Valley & Cajamarca Road .

Today centers on Marañón Valley endemics: Buff-bridled Inca Finch, Gray-winged Inca Finch, Yellow-faced Parrotlet, and Chestnut-backed Thornbird.

Climbing toward Cajamarca, we bird along scenic highland stretches, with potential species including White-tailed Shrike-Tyrant, Rufous Antpitta (Cajamarcae), Rufous-webbed Bush-Tyrant, Jelski’s Chat-Tyrant, Baron’s Spinetail, Black-crested Tit-Tyrant, and many other high-Andean specialists.

Day 16 – San Marcos, Río Chonta & Departure .

A morning visit to San Marcos offers chances to see the critically endangered Great Spinetail and the elusive White-winged Black Tyrant.

We then continue to Río Chonta, prime habitat for high-elevation hummingbirds and Andean species including

Gray-bellied Comet, Rusty-crowned Tit-Spinetail, Striated Earthcreeper, Torrent Tyrannulet, Black Metaltail, and

White-winged Cinclodes.

Day 1 – The Birdwatching North Peru Lima to Tarapoto: First Encounters in the Amazon Foothills.

Your journey begins with a morning flight from Lima to Tarapoto, a bustling Amazonian town surrounded by lush green ridges. After landing around midday, you’ll head straight into the field with a picnic lunch, easing into your first afternoon of birding.

This area is home to the rare Huallagae subspecies of Northern Slaty Antshrike, a local specialty. As you explore the nearby woodlands, keep your binoculars ready for colorful species such as:

You’ll spend the afternoon searching for the Barbet and exploring the surrounding forest, then check into a welcoming family-run lodge. After dinner, those with extra energy can join an optional night outing for Vermiculated Screech-Owl.Tours Birding Wildlife 

Day 3 – The Birdwatching North Peru –  Full Day at Flor de Café: Searching for Rarities.

This is a major highlight of the trip. The day is devoted to the Barbet’s habitat, offering plenty of time to track down your priority species: the Scarlet-banded Barbet and the Cordillera Azul Antbird.

Other noteworthy birds often seen here include:

Day 5 –  The Birdwatching North Peru – Tarapoto to Yurimaguas: Hummingbird Havens.

This day features a spectacular mix of birding and easy travel along a paved road. The first major stop is Cordillera Escalera, one of northern Peru’s hummingbird hotspots.

Day 6 – The Birdwatching North Peru – Yurimaguas to San Lorenzo: Home of the White-Masked Antbird.

Your morning begins with a small-plane flight to San Lorenzo, a remote Maranon River town. Once you arrive, you head straight to the forest where the elusive White-masked Antbird was rediscovered in 2013.

This once-impossible species can now be approached without organizing an entire expedition. You’ll spend the rest of the day exploring the area’s rich Amazonian birdlife before settling into a rustic but clean lodge with private bathrooms.

Day 7 –The Birdwatching North Peru –  Tracking the White-Masked Antbird.

Today is fully dedicated to finding—and photographing—this unusual army-ant follower. With patience, the White-masked Antbird usually reveals itself near ant swarms, although playback can help if conditions are challenging.

Other species in the area may include:

You’ll return to your San Lorenzo lodge for the night.

Day 8 –The Birdwatching North Peru-  Return to Yurimaguas & Travel to Waqanki Lodge.

After your return flight, you’ll travel overland toward Moyobamba with birding stops en route, including a dramatic Oilbird gorge where these nocturnal specialists can be observed on their daytime roosts. You’ll arrive at Waqanki Lodge, a favorite among birders.

Day 9 – The Birdwatching North Peru -Waqanki Lodge: Nightjars, Endemics & Hummingbirds.

Start before sunrise for a chance to see species such as Rufous, Blackish & Spot-winged Nightjars, plus local Screech-Owls.
