Bird Species of Machu Picchu: A Paradise for Birdwatchers
Machu Picchu is not just a wonder of ancient civilization—it’s also a world-class destination for birdwatching, home to over 400 avian species, many of which are rare and vibrantly colored. Among the highlights are trogons, quetzals, motmots, puffbirds, barbets, and toucans, each bringing a burst of life to the lush montane and pre-montane forests surrounding the Inca citadel.

Trogons and Quetzals (Trogonidae)

These shimmering, forest-dwelling birds—related to kingfishers—are often spotted in quiet perches along forest trails.

Crested Quetzal and Golden-headed Quetzal dazzle with metallic green plumage and can be seen near Puente Ruinas and along the Inca Trail.

The Masked Trogon, with its striking coloration and melodious call, is common between Phuyupatamarca and Wiñay Wayna.

Motmots (Momotidae)

Known for their pendulum-like, racket-tipped tails, motmots are slow-moving and found near Aguas Calientes, especially around gardens and forest edges. The Highland Motmot is a must-see for its colorful crown and peaceful presence.

Puffbirds (Bucconidae)
Camouflaged and motionless, the Black-streaked Puffbird is elusive but rewarding to spot in the Mandor and Aobamba valleys. Look for its unique ‘sweeeiiii’ call.

Barbets (Capitonidae)
Barbets like the Versicolored Barbet shine with their kaleidoscopic colors. They forage quietly in the lower elevations of the Sanctuary, rummaging in bromeliads and joining mixed feeding flocks.
