Embark on an extraordinary journey through Peru’s diverse ecosystems, from the cloud forests of Manu to the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu. Day 1: Cusco to Wayquecha Lodge
We begin our birding Tours adventure near Cusco at Huacarpay Lake, where you can observe species such as the Bearded Mountaineer, Cinnamon Teal, Plumbeous Rail, and Streak-fronted Thornbird. We then continue along the Manu Road, making several stops to spot key bird species before arriving at Wayquecha Lodge.
Day 2: Wayquecha to Cock of the Rock Lodge
Early morning birding near Wayquecha and along the Manu Road offers opportunities to see mixed flocks of tanagers, flycatchers, hummingbirds, finches, and toucans. Key species include the Grass-green Tanager, Golden-collared Tanager, White-throated Tyrannulet, Gray-breasted Mountain Toucan, and Rufous-capped Thornbill. Later, we travel to Cock of the Rock Lodge, watching for the Golden-headed Quetzal, White-collared Jay, Red-and-white Antpitta, and Black-and-chestnut Eagle.
Day 3: Cock of the Rock Lodge
At dawn, we visit the Cock of the Rock lek to witness the spectacular mating display of these vibrant birds. After breakfast, we continue roadside birding in the cloud forest, searching for species such as the Black-streaked Puffbird, Crested Quetzal, Golden Tanager, Saffron-crowned Tanager, and Slaty Gnateater.
Day 4: Cock of the Rock Lodge to Amazonia Lodge
An early start takes us further along the Manu Road, where we may encounter the Black-backed Tody-Flycatcher, Peruvian Piedtail, Amazonian Umbrella Bird, Ornate Flycatcher, Cusco Warbler, and Solitary Eagle. We arrive at Amazonia Lodge for an evening of birding. Tour Tambopota Reserved
Day 5: Full-Day Birding at Amazonia Lodge
We explore the lodge’s trails and observation tower, searching for the Plum-throated Cotinga, Red-billed Tyrannulet, and a variety of hummingbirds such as the Rufous-crested Coquette, Golden-tailed Sapphire, and White-necked Jacobin. Other highlights include the Fine-barred Piculet, Scarlet-hooded Barbet, and Amazonian Antpitta.
Day 6: Amazonia Lodge to Ollantaytambo
Early morning birding offers chances to see the Band-tailed Manakin, White-lined Antbird, Goeldi’s Antbird, Bamboo Antshrike, and Blue-crowned Trogon. Afterward, we return to Atalaya and travel to Ollantaytambo for an overnight stay.
Day 7: Ollantaytambo to Abra Malaga
We journey to Abra Malaga for roadside birding in the cloud forest, where key species include the Marcapata Spinetail, Cusco Brushfinch, Parodi’s Hemispingus, Inca Wren, Unstreaked Tit-Tyrant, and Scarlet-bellied Tanager. We return to Ollantaytambo for the night.
Day 8: Abra Malaga to Machu Picchu
A second morning at Abra Malaga, located at 4,316 masl, offers a chance to see high-altitude specialists like the Royal Cinclodes, Puna Tapaculo, Ash-breasted Tit-Tyrant, Giant Conebill, Andean Hillstar, and various ground-tyrants. After birding, we travel by train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes.
Day 9: Aguas Calientes and Mandor Valley
We bird the Mandor Valley, a hotspot for species like the Masked Fruiteater, Ocellated Piculet, Green-and-white Hummingbird, Pale-legged Warbler, and Golden-naped Tanager. Afterward, we return to Aguas Calientes to relax and prepare for our Machu Picchu visit.
Day 10: Machu Picchu and Return to Cusco
After breakfast, we explore the ancient citadel of Machu Picchu, learning about Inca history and enjoying breathtaking views. In the afternoon, we return by train to Cusco, concluding our unforgettable birdwatching journey.
